9$ dollar CHIP computer with cheap display

Last week i got my 9$ CHIP computer in the mail from NextThing.co which i bought through their KickStarter project. The 9$ price is not as cheap as it seems because i had to pay $14 shipping, but all together it’s still a bargain for such a small computer with Bluetooth LE, Wifi and lots of I/O pins available.

Standard you get a composite display cable with three connectors, one for video and two for audio. There is a VGA piggyback board available which will set you back 10$ and there is a HDMI board which costs 15$, but that kind of defeats the 9$ pricetag. Since i was planning to use CHIP headless i didn’t buy any of the piggyback display adaptors.

But to boot CHIP i needed the video output because i had to configure the wifi. Luckily i had a nice 4.3 inch display with composite input, which i bought from Banggood and that worked just fine. The display is so handy that i might keep it connected. One of the uses is to display the video from my webcams which i use as security camera’s.

At the moment i am using the iceweasel browser to connect to my webcam, and switch to full screen with the F11 key.
To prevent the display from going into a powernap, i use the following settings:

xset s off
xset s noblank

And to see all settings just type:

xset q

Other uses for such a cheap and small computer with wifi are endless, for instance Internet radio or displaying domotica info like temperature, humidity, etc. Since it has both bluetooth and wifi, i could also place it near my front door and record wifi and bluetooth mac addresses of people coming to the front door. That way i could detect the mailman before he rang the bell 😉

Have fun!

Have Fun!

Play Youtube Video’s on a TV with a Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi driven TV with a Youtube video

A couple of weeks we went to Maastricht were we stayed in a very nice design Hotel: TownHouse Hotel. There was a very nice ambiance which made us feel at home. The foyer was more like a large living room and next to the hammock there was an old portable TV which displayed content from the cable.
Back at home we bought a similar orange portable TV, which stood really nice on the bar in our orange kitchen. The next step was of course to get content on the screen, so extending the TV cable and having nothing interesting on the telly or doing something differently.

Raspberry Pi Tv Broadcasting Station

The Raspberry Pi has a video output (CVBS) on an RCA connector. When combined with an UHF modulater, this would provide the right signal to feed into the antenna input of the old TV. I bought a RF modulater of ebay, they are very cheap.. One thing, this RF modulator is for PAL (Phase Alternating Line) video, if you live in the States, you’ll need something which supports NTSC (Never The Same Colour :). Once u start using the modulator, you will need to configure the audio subchannel frequency, in the Netherlands thats at 5.5MHz (PAL B/G standard).
Now for configuring the Pi. Lets assume you have got one up and running (tutorials are all over the Internet). The software i used is whitey which can display youtube video’s in console mode (so you don’t have to mess around running X-Windows).
You only need a couple of things for this. At first download youtube-dl

sudo apt-get install youtube-dl

Whitey itself is not in the debian repository, but since it’s a python program it can be easily installed with those tools. You will need “pip” to do that:

sudo apt-get install python-pip

And next use pip to install whitey

sudo pip install whitey

On the Raspberry Pi you need omxplayer to display the video’s. Normally that should be possible by using “pi-yt”, but there is a bug which prevents it from running (at least on my Pi). But with linux there is always an other way to do things, so use the next command line:

yt --player=omxplayer

That should give you a text screen with youtube video’s. Now try to play one by entering the number of your choice.

Connecting everything together

If you used the HDMI connection on you Pi during this setup, do a shutdown and disconnect the HDMI and connect the RCA video out connector to the RF modulator. Also connect sound to the modulator (you will need a conversion cable for that). Next switch on the Pi and the RF modulator. Select a channel, connect to your TV and tune into that channel.
On my TV the text is barely readable, but still enough to give you an indication of whats going on.

Remote Control

YT Youtube commandline player

There is a very simple way to remote control what’s being played, that’s by using the program “screen”. First install it onto your Raspberry:

sudo apt-get install screen

Next fire it up by typing in:

screen

Now you have a shell session that stays active when you disconnect and can ben taken over from another computer. Screen has many more handy features. So from type in the command to start up yt again:

yt --player=omxplayer

And now from an other computer use ssh to connect to your Pi:

ssh pi@ip-adress

when you have logged in, use screen to attach to the running session:

screen -x

And now you can search and play the youtube vid’s from here while they get displayed on your retro TV.

RetroCasting

The fun part is playing really old video’s because it’s like you have a time-machine, looking back into the past. The blurry picture and lofi sound just add to this experience 🙂
Veilig inloggen dankzij Fido U2F

Faillissement

één of twee factoren?

Google twee stap authenticatie.

Stay Safe & have fun!

Disable Foscam Infrared (IR) Leds

I own a couple of foscam Pan Tilt (no Zoom) webcams which i have bought under different brand names, some are Watchbot and one is from the Aldi sold as Supra IPC-1A. The webcams are indoor types, so they are inside looking out through the window. At daytime they work just fine, but when it gets dark they have a sensor which switches on the Infrared Leds to have a better view in low light.
The problem is that they are behind glass, so the IR bounces back en completely blinds the webcam as you can see from the picture:
Although this webcam supposed to have IR Led control from the GUI, in 90% of the time this didn’t work; so i decided to solve this permanently. The photo on the left shows the front of the webcam with the lens, IR Leds and the LDR (Light Dependant Resistor) which is responsible for measuring the light and switching on the IR Leds when it gets to dark.

To disable the Infrared Leds we have to disassemble the camera head. Find a small philips screwdriver and remove the two screw which key the camera head together. Be careful with the screws, when they fall, you most likely will never find them again 🙂
When the screws are loose, you can carefully pry the parts apart.

My webcam now shows a PCB with the camera logic. The with cable on the top is for the connection to the LED and LDR board, i disassembled it further, but there is no need to do so if you only want to enable the IR Leds.

The only thing that you need to do is disconnect that small white cable as shown in the picture below and then reassemble the head. This way you can easily undo the operation in the future if you need to.

Now reconnect the webcam to power and verify that it’s working OK.

Older model Foscam webcams

The image below is from a different kind of foscam webcam, where everything is attached to one single board attached to the motor driven axis. The way to fix this type is also to remove the screws and also unscrew the lens all the way. After that the PCB with everything is accessible and you can fix the IR Leds going on by short circuiting the LDR (low resistance is lots of light). See the image for the idea. By only twisting the LDR, you can simply undo this mod when you want to.
After you reassemble the webcam head and screw in the lens, you will have to refocus to get a good picture again.
Have fun!

Google

Cardboard with Google

Happy VR!

Bluetooth keyboard for the Nokia N95

The only real disadvantage of my Nokia N95-8GB is that there is nog Qwerty keyboard on the device. So typing of e-mails and SMS is cumbersome. And using ssh (for instance with putty for symbian: http://s2putty.sourceforge.net/ is not an option. I found an HP iPQA keyboard (model FA802AA) which i could try and it worked in one go. The N95 has a wireless keyboard application which connects to the keyboard through bluetooth and after that you can type ahead.

If you are in the main screen, you can press the numbers to dial al phone number. And in messaging mode the keyboard functions with all keys. The Windows key seems to be mapped to the left soft key (so you can easily get to messaging mode from the mains screen).
There is an expandable stand in the keyboard which holds the Nokia snugly when switched in to portrait mode, it almost seems as if it’s designed that way.
There might be a problem with the keyboard in switching off the device (i don’t have the manual with it, therefore the might), which is also mentioned by people on the Internet. I disconnect the batteries when it’s not in use to solve that problem.
Leadtek Speeding Master GPS on Linux

I can’t resist buying gadgets, even when they are of no practical use (and that’s the characteristic of most gadgets) i am drawn to buying it, firing it up, see how it works, peek in it’s insides and after that it mostly ends in a box in my overcrowded hobby room. So when i saw this GPS device for only 35 € i had to buy it, even when the device has an outdated Sirf II receiver and only works when attached to a power source. 35 € is just no money for such an ingenious device.

The next thing is of course connect it to my Linux system and see how much trouble it will be to get things working. The Leadtek GPS is a RS232 serial device but comes with a serial to USB convertor. So when i plugged it in, the convertor registers on the system:

# dmesg | tail
usb 4-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 2
usb 4-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice

usbcore: registered new interface driver pl2303
drivers/usb/serial/pl2303.c: Prolific PL2303 USB to serial adaptor driver

And it shows up on a lsusb output:

# lsusb

To communicate with the GPS the documentation says the baudrate should be 38400 bits per second, so we will configure that for the first USB serial port and see what happens.

# /bin/stty -F /dev/ttyUSB0 speed 38400 raw cs8
38400

(i had to repeat the command twice on my system because the first time it reported back 9600 bps)

And Lo and Behold, there is the NMEA data spilling out:

# cat < /dev/ttyUSB0
$GPGGA,120523.932,5210.0992,N,00430.9070,E,1,08,1.2,57.4,M,,,,0000*30
$GPRMC,120523.932,A,5210.0992,N,00430.9070,E,0.00,,080707,,,A*7A
$GPVTG,,T,,M,0.00,N,0.0,K,A*13

Since humans are not optimally equipped for interpreting these sequences of data, we need a program to convert the messages into sensible information, for instance coordinates. I will use gpsd for this purpose. It's a daemon which can provide the information gathered from a GPS device to one or more clients even if they are not running locally. On my Fedora Core 6 system the program was available through yum:

#yum -y install gpsd gpsd-clients

First we will start it up in debug mode to see whether it understands our GPS:

# gpsd -N -n -D 5 /dev/ttyUSB0

gpsd: CLK 0x07
gpsd: Raw SiRF packet type 0x29 length 91: 2900000204059b02a5f30607d707080c143ed61f0000801f18412002b0f4cb000016f20000048f1500000000000000000000000000da0000018f00000000000002a35

gpsd: Raw SiRF packet type 0x07 length 20: 07059b0043cb800600017a970016870f02a5f306

That's looking good, so now we can run it as intended:

# gpsd -n /dev/ttyUSB0

And have a client connect to finally show us our position:

$ xgps -speedunits kph -altunits meters

click on the image to see it in a seperate window

Now you could program a tomahawk missile with these coordinates and wipe me of the face of the earth (better ring first to see if i am at home, otherwise it would be a total waste of such an expensive missile). But before spending a million dollar on a rocket it might be interesting to know how accurate these coordinates are, otherwise you might wipe out my neigbhors, and they are perfectly amicable people.
One way of getting an impression is to build a so called scatter graph of the GPS data. The GPS outputs coordinate data approximately once every second, so we could collect one hour of coordinates and put them into a graph. The way to do this is actually very simple with gpsd:

$ gpsprof -n 3600 | gnuplot -persist
gpsprof: looking for fix...first fix in 0.73sec, gathering samples...

Here is the resulting graph:

click on the image to see it in a seperate window

This is all the help you will get from me, both in connecting the GPS device and in programming the missile with my home coordinates.

Have fun!

mencoder orgineel.ext -quiet -oac pcm -ovc xvid -ofps 15 -vf scale=160:-2 -xvidencopts bitrate=256:vhq=4:me_quality=4:max_bframes=0 -o film.avi

transcode -i film.avi -P1 -b 0,1 -o U3-film.avi

mplayer 'rtsp://streams3.omroep.nl/tv/nos/journaal/bb.laatste.rm'

mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile journaal.rm 'rtsp://streams3.omroep.nl/tv/nos/journaal/bb.laatste.rm'

[perl]
#!/usr/bin/perl
# (c) 20060801 by Ewald

Hah! This is fun, writing a blog with my qtek 9090 mobile pda phone thingy. The extensible keyboard allows me to type at reasonable speed (using two thumbs) and the screen at qvga (240×320) gives a workable display of a webpage. If you prefer you can skip the keyboard and use Grafitti (like on a palm pilot) or just write the characters on the screen and have them transerred into text by the character reconizer. It is possible to rotate the view 90 degrees, but of course you can’t reasonably use the buildin keyboard anymore.
At the moment i am using wifi to connect to the home network, but when out of reach of a wifi network you can use GPRS (this is the data part of your GSM cell phone). The qtek is also equipped with a vga resolution camera, so you could post pictures with your blog as well.
